Elements and Performance Criteria

1. Plan and prepare for cable and hose laying and recovery operations
   • Access, interpret and apply cable and hose operations documentation and ensure the work activity is compliant
   • Obtain, interpret, clarify and confirm work requirements
   • Select, and check for faults, equipment and/or attachments for work activities
   • Identify, address and report potential hazards and risks
   • Select and wear correct personal protective equipment
   • Obtain and interpret emergency procedures, and be prepared for fire/accident/emergency
2. Perform cable and hose laying and recovery
   • Coordinate activities with others prior to commencement of, and during, the work activity
   • Carry out pre-start, start-up, park, shutdown and secure equipment procedures
   • Drive and operate equipment within recommended speed, engine capability and limitations
   • Carry out cable and hose laying and recovery, and engage controls to govern speed, direction and tension
   • Lay excess cable safely
   • Prepare and visually inspect cables for connection, and mark the location
3. Carry out operator maintenance
   • Prepare machine for maintenance
   • Conduct inspection and fault finding
   • Carry out scheduled maintenance tasks
   • Return the equipment to service
   • Process written maintenance records
4. Conduct housekeeping activities
   • Clear work area and dispose of or recycle materials
   • Clean and maintain condition of equipment, ensure suitability for use, and address/report issues
   • Manage/report hazards, and maintain a safe working environment
   • Process written records

Performance Evidence

Evidence is required to be collected that demonstrates a candidate’s competency in this unit. Evidence must be relevant to the roles within this sector’s work operations and satisfy all of the requirements of the performance criteria of this unit and include evidence that the candidate:

locates and applies relevant documentation, policies and procedures

works effectively with others to undertake and complete the laying and recovering cables and hoses that meet all of the required outcomes including:

using a range of communications techniques and equipment to convey information to others

maintaining written and verbal reporting requirements and procedures

communicating to confirm work requirements

demonstrates completion of the laying and recovering of cables and hoses that safely, effectively and efficiently meets all of the required outcomes on more than one (1) occasion including:

completing cable laying operations

completing hose laying operations

completing cable or hose recovery operations

driving, operating equipment and engaging controls to govern speed, direction and tension

preparing and inspecting cables for connection, and marking the locations

Knowledge Evidence

The candidate must demonstrate knowledge in laying and recovering cables and hoses through:

site and equipment safety requirements

types, uses and characteristics of cables and hoses

cable and hose laying equipment characteristics, technical capabilities and limitations

cable and hose laying and recovery operational and maintenance procedures

basic geological, geographical and survey data

organising and prioritizing work tasks

prepared for fire/accident/emergency
